A high-performing website is built before the first line of code is written. Its technical architecture, markup choices and content strategy determine how well it can rank in search engines over the long term. Creating a well-optimized website means addressing server-side performance, accessibility and editorial relevance at the same time.

INP and Core Web Vitals: metrics that affect your website’s search rankings

Since March 2024, INP has replaced FID as the responsiveness metric in Core Web Vitals. This is a significant change: FID measured only the delay before the first interaction, while INP evaluates page responsiveness throughout the entire visit.

A site can have a good Largest Contentful Paint score and still fail on INP if the main thread is blocked by JavaScript that hasn’t been deferred. We find that most INP regressions stem from third-party scripts (analytics, chat widgets, advertising pixels) loaded without a prioritization strategy.

For every JavaScript resource, the question is simple: does this script need to run before the user can interact? If not, it should be loaded with defer or conditionally. The improvement in INP is often more noticeable than any image optimization.

For LCP, compressing images to WebP or AVIF is still essential. But the limiting factor is often server response time (TTFB). Cheap shared hosting with an uncached CMS can produce a TTFB that drags down LCP before the browser even starts rendering.

Professionals who help build performance-focused websites, such as the Referencement Consulting website, factor in these technical requirements from the project planning stage to avoid costly redesigns just a few months after launch.

Digital accessibility and website creation: a regulatory requirement to plan for

Since June 28, 2025, the European Accessibility Act has imposed requirements on e-commerce services aimed at consumers. In practical terms, any website that offers online purchases, bookings or subscriptions is covered. A brochure website with no transactions is generally outside its scope.

Microenterprises providing services may qualify for an exemption under certain conditions, but it does not apply in every case. This should be checked during project planning, not when the site is ready to go live.

Accessibility involves more than adding alt attributes to images. It applies to complete user journeys:

  • Payment forms must be keyboard-navigable and compatible with screen readers, including validation and confirmation steps
  • Text and background colors must have sufficient contrast across all pages, not just the homepage
  • Error messages must be conveyed programmatically, not just through a color change in the relevant field

Your choice of framework, component library and HTML structure determines how easily the site can meet accessibility requirements. Planning for accessibility from the outset avoids having to rebuild every component once the site is live.

SEO content and markup: structuring pages for Google and AI features

Guidance published by Google in July 2025 confirms one thing: no specific markup is required to appear in Google’s AI features. The criteria are the same as for traditional organic search: pages must be indexable and their content must be useful.

It’s better to invest in editorial quality than in hypothetical “AI” optimization with no technical basis. Content should address a clearly identified search intent, with a coherent internal linking structure and title tags and meta descriptions written for every page.

Title tags and meta descriptions

The title tag remains the primary relevance signal for search engines. It should include the page’s main keyword and stay within the display limit in Google results. A meta description does not directly affect rankings, but it can influence click-through rate.

Every page on the site should have a unique title tag. Duplicating titles across multiple pages dilutes the signal and creates internal competition.

Heading hierarchy and internal linking

The heading structure (H1, H2, H3) should reflect the semantic hierarchy of the content: one H1 per page, H2s for main sections and H3s for subsections. Skipping a level (using an H1 followed by an H3 with no H2) is still a common mistake that makes the content harder for search engine crawlers to understand.

Internal links distribute authority between pages and guide crawlers to priority content. A 20-page site with no internal links between pages forces Google to discover each page in isolation, slowing down indexing and fragmenting topical relevance.

Technical choices when building a website: hosting, CMS and technical debt

Your choice of CMS and hosting determines the performance ceiling. A WordPress site with a dozen poorly maintained plugins accumulates technical debt, leading to slower load times and security vulnerabilities.

  • Choose hosting with built-in server caching and HTTP/2 enabled rather than generic shared hosting with no configuration
  • Limit plugins to features you actually use and audit their impact on page size
  • Set up an SSL certificate from launch (HTTPS has been a Google ranking signal for several years)
  • Configure 301 redirects at launch to prevent 404 errors on old URLs after a redesign

A well-optimized website’s performance depends on decisions made early on. Fixing an architectural flaw after launch is like repairing the foundations of an occupied building. Initial technical decisions (server-side or client-side rendering, caching strategy, static resource formats) shape the site throughout its lifespan.

A fast, accessible website structured for search engines is not the result of last-minute optimization. It comes from a project brief that gives performance and organic search the same priority as design and business functionality.
